Preparation for Taking Online Piano Class

I have written up some of the basic guideline for taking piano lesson. Please read the following if you are thinking to sign up for online lesson:

Notes for Students of Age 6 and Under

For online lessons with students at/under the age of 6, I strongly encourage the adult- whether their parent or caregiver, to sit in the lesson. Their attention span is more limited than those who are older. They need a reminder to stay in focus. It is more effective for them to get prompts from someone who is in the same room, rather than through the computer screen.

Platform for Online Lesson

I have been using FaceTime and Zoom for online lessons. It has been working well with the piano sound. Unless you have a strong preference on specific application, I will ask you to set up Zoom ( as of September 2020), since it can be used universally, regardless of the operation system of your computer.

What Device Should You Use for Online Lesson?

While it works fine with the device as small as your iPhone, I must say that you will get the better effect by viewing with a larger screen. Also, the larger devices tend to have better speaker (s), so you can hear more depth of the piano sound. That said, I have had quite a few kids who are using regular iPhone for their lesson. If you are satisfied with it, it works just fine, so no worries.

I’ve seen some higher grade students use headset/earphones, and I think it is a great idea, just make sure to charge them before then lesson, if it is battery operated ( so that you do not have to run to the charger during the class:))

Background Noise

Please make sure that there is no significant noise in the same room when you are having a lesson. I know it is a difficult situation, especially during the pandemic everyone has to work at home. Some people may share the living room as working space. That is totally fine. However, if other people need to talk on the phone or watch lecture/attend meeting that have to be on speaker, you need to be in a different location. If this becomes a recurring problem on your end, please consult me to rearrange the lesson time.

Log In Ahead of Time

I usually give log in ID and password a day before or on the day a few hours before the lesson time via email. If you are on Zoom, you can simply click on the link or type in zoom id and password manually. I have noticed that there are a minute of log in process for some people, and during that event we cannot hear/ see each other. I don’t know why that happens to some and others can begin right away. But jut to be safe, please log in a few minutes prior to the lesson time. If you use FaceTime, I will call your FaceTime at the time of the lesson. Please wait until I call you, since I may be in another lesson even if you call me.

I guess that is all for the initial preparation for the first lesson. If you have any other questions, please contact me through my contact page.

Thank you for reading and Looking forward to meeting you all!
