-Precious Moments-
I had a privilege teaching as a group piano instructor at USDAN fine arts camp in Suffolk Country, NY, this year. My pianist friend formerly taught there told me that I would be commuting to the woods every day and would forget that I live in NYC. My immideate reaction was“what?, there is no way to get access to the woods in the middle or Suffolk county!” The location was indeed in the wonderful land, that emerged out of nowhere (since the county itself is pretty flat).
There were so many different activities that students could sign up – from instrumental group class to painting, swimming, and writing class etc. They looked having fun every day. There were performance assemblies every day to see performances whether it was by professionals or students.
In a cabin, I taught 11 piano students splitting into junior class ( probably 7-10 years old) and senior class (11-13 years old). Someone was even coming from California! All the students were very welcoming and motivated, and improved in playing very much. I could confidently say that” if kids practices every day, they will get better!”
Getting up so early to commute by Long Island Railroad seemed extremely challenging to me in the beginning, but somehow I made it and it was not actually bad at all. Indeed I LOVED it!
I have been feeling a bit sentimental about the camp right now, since I don’t see my students and the beautiful nature anymore.
Let’s hope for next year’s opportunity!
